Charles R. Aschemeier
Charles R. (“Charlie”) Aschemeier, 75, of Onsted, Michigan passed away on January 4, 2023, at his home surrounded by family. He was born on July 17, 1947, in Napoleon, Ohio to Wally and Wanda (Stevenson) Aschemeier. On June 16, 1989, he married Cynthia (Kovacik) Sparks in Toledo, Ohio and they moved full-time to the Irish Hills area.
Charlie grew up in Defiance, Ohio and is a 1965 graduate of Defiance High School. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from The Defiance College on August 29, 1969, and Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the University of Toledo, College of Law on March 21, 1975. He specialized in family and criminal law and practiced law for many years in the Toledo area.
After moving to the Irish Hills, he was employed by LifeWays as the Director of Recipient Rights. He served as President of RROAM (Recipient Rights Officers Association of Michigan) for several years while working at LifeWays. He was passionate in his advocacy for individuals with mental health challenges.
After retiring from LifeWays, Charlie spent many winters in Tampa, Florida where his wife, Cindy, was employed. He enjoyed the warm weather and making a new group of great friends. Charlie was a SAL member of the American Legion Post #315 in Brooklyn, a member of the Irish Hills Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Brooklyn Moose where he spent many days sharing stories and laughs with old friends and was always ready to make a new friend. After his health and mobility declined in recent years, he found it difficult to get out and visit friends. Neighbors and passers-by could routinely find him on the porch at the lake and were always welcome to stop for a chat or just receive a friendly wave as they went about their day.
Charlie will be missed by his loving wife of 34 years, Cindy, his sons Eric Aschemeier of Toledo, Ohio, and Jason (Katie) Sparks of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Grandchildren; Brittani (Kyle) Burns, Tanner Aschemeier, Leah and Sydney Sparks. Brothers; John (Donna) Aschemeier and Joseph (Janet) Aschemeier, both of Defiance, Ohio, brother-in-law, Mickey Kovacik of Toledo, Ohio, sister-in-law, Connie Valiton of Hamilton, Ohio, several nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Jay, and his first wife and mother of his children, Mary Lee Aschemeier.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of Lenawee or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Per Charlie’s wishes cremation has taken place, no funeral service will be held, and a “plain old party” will be held at later date.
