John Shepherd Herbst

John Shepherd Herbst passed away at St. Vincent’s Mercy Medical Center on Monday, January 4, 2021.  John was born to Grace Libbey (Frey) Herbst and Harry “Tommy” Herbst on September 17, 1948 in Cleveland, OH. They both proceeded him in death.

John grew up in the Cleveland area, graduated from Rocky River High School and joined the Navy when he was 19.  He served 4 years during the Vietnam War and was Honorably Discharged in 1971.  

Sadly, John was another statistic, just another old person quietly added to the massive total of Americans lost to Covid-19.  Yet, he was more than that.  He died a week after his long-term care facility got their first round of COIVD-19 vaccines, but it was too late for him and the over 350,000 other Americans that have been killed by this horrible disease.

Like many veterans, John worked until his body just couldn’t work anymore.  He was employed at Welch Printing in Perrysburg, OH.  He loved to draw cartoon characters and always had a notebook in his pocket. His cats Mollie and Minnie were his sole companions and he loved them dearly.  John served his country with honor and died alone from a disease his country allowed to run rampant.  Let us not forget those that have no voice and never allow this to happen again.

Thanks to the caring staff at St. Vincent’s and Tim who never gave up on him. He is survived by his friend Steve.

Military funeral services are being arranged by American Cremation Events in partnership with the Lucas County Veterans Service Commission. Interment at the Great Lakes National Cemetery will be announced when finalized.
