Pete Kirby

Clarence E. “Pete” Kirby, age 78, died January 9th, 2022 at Promedica Monroe Regional Hospital.  He had been in declining health since June 2020, after the death of his beloved granddaughter, Darrian M. Young. 

Pete was born May 12th, 1943, in Old Lock, West Virginia to Clabe E. & Della May (Long) Kirby.  He moved his family to Monroe in 1963.  Pete married Patricia A. Ellison on November 7th, 1964, at Grape Baptist Church in Monroe. 

Pete worked for Michigan Laborers Local #1191 (Detroit) and Local #465 (Monroe) for over 35 years before retiring in December 1999.  His greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with and babysitting his grandchildren and telling stories of his childhood in West Virginia.   “Paw” was well known for his vegetable soups, chili, hot pepper butter and the ability to find common interests with people he just came across.   

Pete was preceded in death by his beloved granddaughter, Darrian, parents, brothers: James Long, Charles, and Edward Kirby, and a sister, Margaret Kirby.  He is survived by his wife, Pat, son Rich (Amy Hammons), daughter Tammi (Brad) Kamprath, granddaughter, Darby Young, grandsons: Brayden and Braxton Hammons-Kirby, and siblings: Jerry and Sue Kirby.  Also surviving are sisters-in-law Judy Long and Linda Kirby.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

In honoring his wishes, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held later this spring.  Memorial contributions in Pete’s name may be made to the Darrian M. Young Memorial Fund at Monroe County Animal Control, 911 S. Raisinville Rd, Monroe, MI 48161.
